This is the web service for the Picture Collections of the National Board of Antiquities and the Picture Collections of Maritime Museum of Finland. You can use the service to browse and research selection from the digitized collections of the Picture Collections of National Board of Antiquities and the Picture Collections of Maritime Museum of Finland and study the visual representation of Finnish cultural heritage. You can also purchase image files and image-specific one-off right-to-publish licences.

The web service includes a highly representative sample - approximately 120,000 images - of the collections. More images will be added to the service once they have been digitised.

Because the collections have been indexed in Finnish, also the search engine and the web service are in Finnish.

The Picture Collections of National Board of Antiquities 

The Picture Collections of National Board of Antiquities is a national cultural and historical image archive. Its collections of images depicting foreign cultures as well as the history, folk culture, built cultural environment and press photo archives of Finland are the widest in the country. The images in the archive cover the period from the 16th century to the present day. The collections include photographs, drawings, watercolours, graphics, and prints.

The Finnish Press Photo Archive JOKA

The Journalistic Press Photo Archive JOKA makes news, entertainment, cultural and sports photographs from the past available for everyone to view. The press photo archive ensures the preservation of the picture collections of important press photographers, newspapers and magazines together with other museums and archives, and it strengthens the position of photojournalism as a part of cultural heritage. JOKA was established as a part of the Picture Collections of the National Board of Antiquities in 2014.

The Picture Collections of the Maritime Museum of Finland

The Maritime Museum's picture collections include photographs of Finnish merchant vessels, images of work and free-time on board a ship, portraits of the crews as well as photographs of various activities of  the Finnish Maritime Administration, such as pilot stations, lighthouses and icebreakers. One could mention sea captain Sten Lille's photographs of sailing ships and Pelastusyhtiö Neptun's (Salvage Company Neptun) collection as examples of the picture collection's interesting material donated by numerous individuals and organizations. The web service contains approximately 3 000 images from the maritime museum's collections, mainly originating from the Finland Steamship Company (also known as FÅA) from the late 19th Century onwards up until the early 1960s.
